Abstract

The Middle Ages, spanning roughly from the 5th to the late 15th century, were marked by a complex relationship between religion and politics. The period witnessed the intertwining of spiritual and temporal powers, most notably through the establishment of religious institutions as political authorities. This paper explores the influence of religious doctrines on political structures and vice versa, emphasizing how religious authorities like the Catholic Church in Europe, and Islamic caliphates, shaped governance, law, and social order. By analyzing key events and figures, this paper seeks to understand the ways in which religious ideologies were employed to justify political power and how politics, in turn, shaped religious practices and beliefs.
